For this project, I created a hand-lettered typeface using a grid as the blueprint to build the shapes of the letters on top of. The goal was to create a unique, consistently themed typeface - visually and conceptually.
Before I sketched, I created a word list that would serve as my inspiration and ideas for my final type:
Bold
Geometric
Contrasting
Swirling
Ribbon
Ocean
Moon
Waves
Blob
Lava Lamp
During the first WIP, I uploaded my sketches for classmates to give constructive criticism and ideas on how to strengthen my designs. Using this feedback, I cleaned and vectorized my type. I hand-drew it in Procreate using a calligraphy brush, then transferred it to Illustrator, converted to vector, and cleaned up the vectors.
Hand-lettering type is still a new territory for me, and the physical aspect of hand lettering is as much of a learning process as the conceptual/mental aspect, if not more so. I’m learning to really break down each individual letter & learning the fundamental rules of each so that I can know how to bend those rules.
